Reciprocal agreement
An agreement with a compatible healthcare organizational unit that may have excess capacity. Both healthcare organizational units will have the need for a backup site and be able to give up space and/or processing time in the event of a disaster occurring at the other healthcare organizational unit.
Recovery Center
Facility separate from the main facility and equipped with adequate communications equipment from which initial recovery efforts are manned and media-business communications are maintained. The management team uses this facility temporarily to begin coordinating the recovery process and its use continues until the alternate sites are functional.
Recovery Point Objective (RPO)
The point in time to which systems and data must be recovered after an outage. (E.g. end of previous day's processing). RPOs are often used as the basis for the development of backup strategies, and as a determinant of the amount of data that may need to be recreated after the systems or functions have been recovered.
Recovery Site
A location, other than the normal facility, used to process data and/or conduct critical business functions in the event of a disaster. Also referred to as an alternate site.
Recovery Strategy
An approach by a healthcare organization that will ensure the recovery and continuity of a component of production in the face of a disaster or other major outage. Plans and methodologies are determined by the healthcare organizations strategy. There may be more than one methodology or solution for a healthcare organizations strategy.
Recovery Time Objective (RTO)
A ‘RTO' is the time frame by which the healthcare organization's critical business functions must be recovered. In other words, it is the maximum amount of time that the function can be suspended before causing a severe impact to the unit's financial well-being.
Regenstrief Institute
A research foundation for improving health care by optimizing the capture, analysis, content, and delivery of health care information. Regenstrief maintains the LOINC coding system that is being considered for use as part of the HIPAA claim attachments standard.
Restoration
Process of planning for and/or implementing procedures for the repair or relocation of the primary site and its contents, and for the restoration of normal operations at the primary site.
RFA
The Regulatory Flexibility Act.
Risk Assessment
Process of identifying the risks to a healthcare organization, defining the controls in place to reduce healthcare organization exposure and evaluating the need for additional controls. Risk analysis often involves an evaluation of the probabilities of a particular event.
Risk Mitigation
Implementation of measures to deter specific threats to the continuity of business operations, and/or respond to any occurrence of such threats in a timely and appropriate manner.
