So, You Wanna Be an Export Expert?

Whether you want to export your sequence for the Web, CD, or DVD, there are a lot of options, but really only one choice: export as a QuickTime movie (File > Export > QuickTime Movie).

Here's the short answer to why.

Using Final Cut to create optimized, compressed files is like using a hammer to drive screws; it will work, but it's the wrong tool for the job. Final Cut does great exports, but other software does better compression.

Creating movies for the Web always involves creating multiple versions (for slow, medium, and fast connections) of multiple formats (QuickTime, Real, and Windows Media). This means exporting the same file from Final Cut over and over again.

You can do it, but life is too short.

Instead, use Final Cut to export one file, at the highest quality, then move that file into Sorenson Squeeze, discreet cleaner, Hip Flix, Compressor, or the compression program of your choice. In all cases, these do a far better job of compression than Final Cut, plus they can create all the versions you need at once through batch processing. While you are out sipping lattes at Starbuck'sor wherever world-class editors hang out in your part of the woodsyour computer can be back at the office doing all the work.

NOTE | When Should You Use File > Export QuickTime Conversion?

Only when you need to quickly compress a file and don't need the highest quality or the smallest file size. Or when you need to export a still frame. Or when you need to convert a sequence into a special format, like a Targa sequence.

In other words, only in special circumstances.

Exporting a QuickTime movie always exports at the highest quality (8- or 10-bit video). Exporting as QuickTime Conversion limits your video to 8-bit. This will be noticeable if you are doing lots of compositing or gradient color work. DV, by the way, is always 8-bit video, so the effects of QuickTime Conversion will be less with DV source material.

QuickTime Conversion can be very helpful, especially in a pinch. But it should not be your first choice.
