The Workflow of Editing Audio

Editing audio goes hand-in-hand with editing video. In fact, as you'll see in these exercises, when you have clips with synced audio and video, you edit both the audio and video at the same time.

However, there are many, many times when you want to adjust the timing of the audio differently from the video. Or use one transition for video and another for audio. Or add music and effects to your sequence.

For all these reasons, I've found it helpful to follow a workflow for editing audio, similar to what you learned in Chapter 1, "Get Organized," for Final Cut itself. This audio workflow consists of five steps:

1.

Edit the audio to the Timeline.

2.

Trim the audio.

3.

Add transitions.

4.

Add effects.

5.

Mix.

The exercises in this chapter directly follow this editing workflow, with the exception of audio transitions, which are covered in the next chapter, so you can learn a process for editing, as well as specific techniques.
