3. One More Way to Create a Transition

In this exercise, you'll learn one more way to create a transitionusing keyframes. In this case, you will change the opacity of a clip to fade it from black to full screen.

Opacity is the measure of transparency of a clip. A clip with an opacity of 0% is completely transparent (invisible). A clip with an opacity of 100% is fully opaque. (You'll work more with opacity in Chapter 10, "Motion Effects.")

1.

Open Exercise 08 Lesson 2 and load Seq Keyframe into the Timeline.

2.

In the bottom left of the Timeline, click the third bar (it turns blue) to expand the vertical height of all tracks. Then, click the Clip Overlays button, next to it on the left, to turn on Clip Overlays.

You used this button in the last chapter to set audio volumes using the red rubber bands inside each clip. This time, you'll use it to set the video opacity for a clip.

This Timeline has been adjusted so that the small pictures at the beginning of a video clip are not displayed (Sequence > Settings > Timeline). This makes it easier to illustrate how to use keyframes to set a fade in/fade out.

3.

Select the Pen tool (press P) and set a keyframe near the leading edit point of this clip.

4.

Chapter 12," Output Your Project," using a keyframe fade in/out has significant benefits when you are working with multiple levels of video. And this is the reason I mention it nowjust to put all transition descriptions together in one place.

That's the end of this exercise. You can save your work if you want, but it isn't necessary. You won't be coming back to this sequence.
