4. Changing the Default Transition

In this exercise, you'll learn how to change the default transition. You can only have one default video transition and one default audio transition. This exercise shows you how to change both of them. On my system, I set my default video transition to a 20-frame cross dissolve, and my default audio transition to a 4 frame +3dB cross fade.

1.

Open Exercise 08 Lesson 2 and load Seq Snowboard final into the Timeline. You'll be working principally in the Browser for this exercise.

2.

Go to the Browser and click the Effects tab, twirl down Video Transitions, then twirl down Dissolves. Assuming you haven't changed your default transition, Cross Dissolve should be underlined. (And, if you have changed your default transition, then skip ahead to the next exercise.)

See how the name Cross Dissolve is underlined? This marks it as the default transition. In this case, you need to change the duration of the default transition from 1:00 (indicated in the Length column on the right) to 20 frames.

3.

Double-click the Length column to select it. Then, enter 20 for the new Duration. Press Return to make the change permanent.

4.

The last step is to save this as the new default. Select Cross Dissolve in the Effects tab, then click the Effects menu and choose Video Transitions > Set Default, and Final Cut will make this transition your new default transition. (Or, Ctrl+click the name of the transition and choose Set Default from the shortcut menu.)

The nice thing about default transitions is that you can apply them with a keystroke: Cmd+T applies the default video transition to any selected edit point or points.

If you wanted to make a different transition your default, simply select it, make any duration changes you need, go to the Effects menu, and choose Set Default.

In FCP 4.1.1 or earlier, you had to"Clear Default" before setting a new default. This extra step has been eliminated in FCP HD.

5.

Changing the default audio transition is similar. In this case, twirl down Audio Transitions and select Cross Fade (+3 dB).

6.

Change the Duration to 4 (for four frames) and press Return.

7.

Select Cross Fade (+3 dB) and click the Effects menu, and choose Audio Transitions > Set Default. (Be sure you are in the Audio Transitions section.)

Ta-da! That's it. Another "less-than-10-stepper." To apply the default audio transition, select an audio edit point and either use the Effects menu or press Option+Cmd+T.

You don't need to save your work; default audio and video transitions are saved automatically in your Preferences files.
