What Is Final Cut Pro HD?

Final Cut is a delightfully powerful tool to help you create, organize, craft, and output the ideas you have in your mind, and in your camera, so that you can share them with the rest of the world.

And "tool" is the most important word in that paragraph. Because even with an incredibly powerful tool like Final Cut, your creative vision is still in charge. Final Cut simply helps you give that vision life.

Which brings me to my first important point: There is nothing you can do in Final Cut that will damage your computer, or the media files you have stored on your hard disk. So feel free to experiment. Choose a menu, or click a button and watch what happens. It may not always look good. It may not be what you want or expect. But, you won't hurt anything. You can always undo your changes. Remember, many a famous filmmaker owes a part of their reputation to blind luck at the right moment.

Voltaire once wrote: "The perfect is the enemy of the good." In editing, this means spending so much time to create the perfect effect that you run out of time to finish the show on deadline.

There is no such thing as the "perfect" way to edit. Final Cut doesn't care if you like the keyboard or the mouseit allows you to edit either way. Final Cut doesn't care if you are a slow or fast editoryour program plays back at the same speed regardless of how fast you edit.

Final Cut does not giggle. Final Cut does not smirk. Final Cut does not call its friends after you've finished working for the day, exclaiming, "did you see that bizarre edit he did today?" Final Cut does not evaluate your worth as an editor and give you a report card at the end of your project.

So, don't get hung up in the search to edit "perfectly." This book is filled with tips and techniques that will make you a more efficient and proficient editor. Make you faster. Make you more comfortable. Make you more effective. But neither this book, nor Final Cut, can help you be more creativeor improve the quality of your story. That comes from within you.

And telling your story is why you are editing in the first place.
