Recording voice-overs: Lesson 12-5

The Premiere Pro Audio Mixer is also a basic recording studio. It can record anything you can connect to your soundcard. In this case, you'll use your PC's mic to do a voice recording.

1.

Make sure that your PC's mic is plugged in to the Mic input on your sound card and if your mic has a switch, it's turned on.

2.

Minimize Premiere Pro (click the little dash in the upper-right corner).

3.

Select Start > Programs > Accessories > Entertainment > Volume Control.

Note

If you can't track down this little audio applet, look in C:\Windows\System32 and double-click sndvol32.exe.

4.

Select Options > Properties.

5.

Click the Recording radio button, make sure Microphone is checked, and click OK.

6.

In the Recording Control window, make sure the Microphone is Selected, its volume is sufficiently high and then minimize or close the Recording Control window.

7.

Maximize Premiere Pro (click its name in the Windows Task Bar).

8.

Select Edit > Preferences > Audio Hardware and check that your Default Device is the hardware you have connected your mic to.

Note

Generally, selecting Adobe Default Windows Sound 1.5 or Premiere Pro Windows Sound will cover most circumstances. But if you have a higher-end audio card you should select it, refer to its product manual and make any needed changes to its ASIO settings.

9.

Add a mono audio track to the Timeline (right-click on a track header and open the Add Tracks dialog box).

10.

Click the Enable Track for Recording button (the microphone) at the top of that newly added audio track in the Audio Mixer.

You can enable as many tracks as you like but you can't record to the Master or a submix track.

11.

Click the red Record button at the bottom of the audio mixer. It'll start blinking.

12.

Move the CTI to where you want this narration to begin (it'll cover up any audio on the selected track at that location).

13.

Click the Play button in the Audio Mixer and start your narration.

Note

If you chose to locate the CTI in the music, you'll hear the music as you record your voice. Being able to hear your sequence's audio as you narrate can be a big help. Laying down video clips then recording a narration is a workflow some editors follow.

14.

When you finish recording, click the Stop button.

An audio clip appears on the selected audio track and in the Project panel. Premiere Pro automatically names that clip based on the Audio track number or name and adds that audio file to the project file folder on your hard drive.

What About Feedback?

If you record audio and you have not taken steps to mute the output, you might get feedbackthat lovely screeching noise that happens when a mic gets too close to a loudspeaker. There are several ways to deal with that: You can click the Mute button for the track, turn down your speakers (use headphones to hear yourself) or select Edit > Preferences > Audio and click Mute Input During Timeline Recording.
