Putting text on a path: Lesson 7-3

The Path Text tool is both elegant and tricky. It enables you to build paths that are simple or complex, straight and/or curved, for your text to follow.

If you've worked with the Pen tool in Adobe Photoshop, you know how to use the Path Text tool. You define a path by clicking a number of locations in the Titler panel and dragging handles at each point to define the curves.

1.

Select the Path Type tool ().

2.

Click and drag anywhere in the text creation screen.

That creates an anchor point with handles. You'll use those handles to define the curve's characteristics. If you only click without dragging the cursor, you won't add handles. It's tricky to add them later.

3.

Click and drag somewhere else to create another anchor point with handles.

The Titler automatically creates a curved path between the two anchor points.

Note

You can add as many anchor points as you choose. Each new point outside the confines of the current bounding box expands the bounding box dimensions. Delete points by selecting the Delete Anchor Point tool (see next figure) and clicking on an anchor.

4.

Click the Pen tool ().

5.

Hover that cursor over the handles (as highlighted in the next figure, your cursor will change to a black arrow) and drag the handles.

Make them longer, shorter, or just move them around to see how they work.

6.

Drag the anchor points to lengthen or shorten the path.

7.

Click anywhere inside the newly created bounding box.

That will place a blinking text cursor at the beginning of the curved line.

8.

Type in some text. Your Titler screen should look something like the next figure.

If you're having trouble with the Pen tool, double-click Lesson 7-3 Text in the Project panel and work with it.

You will want to practice creating Path Text if you want to perfect it, but for now just try to get a basic idea of how it works.
