Adding a transition: Lesson 2-3
View your sequence now. The clips move in a logical order, the sliding door jump cut is gone, and the sequence ends with a nice freeze frame. What you'll do now is add a transition to fix an abrupt edit between the third and fourth clipsthe tight shot of the yellow flyer and the medium shot of the actor holding the flyer. In clip three the actor is holding the flyer horizontally over a box and in the fourth clip the paper is vertical and in front of the actor's face. There is no way to match the action, as you did with the sliding door, but applying a video transition can make that edit less abrupt.Either continue with your current project or open Lesson 2-3.
NoteIf you drag the transition slightly to the left or right of the edit point, the icon will change to show a transition that ends or starts at the edit point. That's no big deal but for our purposes, try to center the transition on the edit line.

An Information message pops up noting "Insufficient Media." These clips do not have any extra head or tail frames (a concept I explain later in the book) to use for a transition. But Premiere Pro can deal with that by repeating frames from the clips.
6. | Click OK to close the "Insufficient Media" information window.![]() |
7. | Click the little transition rectangle (highlighted in the next figure) that now resides at the top of the edit point between the two clips. That displays the transition's parameters in the Effect Controls panel.[View full size image]![]() |
8. | Drag the CTI through the edit point in the Timeline to preview the transition. The fourth clip slides in from the left over the third. I'd prefer that it slide up from the bottom, since that follows the flow of the edit. |
9. | Click the little "South to North" triangle below the transition preview screen at the top of the Effect Controls panel (highlighted in the following figure) to change the transition's direction. The preview screen changes accordingly. |
10. | Drag the CTI through the edit to preview your work.![]() |
