Managing media in the Project panel: Lesson 4-5

You used naming conventions to make accessing your video and other media assets easier. One additional step will enhance that ease of access: organizing your Project panel.

The Project panel is simply a means to access and organize your assetsvideo clips, audio files, still images, graphics and sequences. Each listed media asset is a link. The files themselvesthe video clips and so onremain in their file folders.

Importing and logically arranging your assets in the Project panel is simple. It's not much more than adding a few bins, then doing some dragging and dropping.

Given an option from the Project panel, explain the purpose of that option.

In this lesson you will check out some of the Project panel options and then rearrange the clips you have been working with in Lessons 4-1 through 4-4. If you need to start fresh, open Project 4-5.

1.

Click the Icon button in the lower-left corner of the Project panel (highlighted in the next figure).

That changes the Project panel display from a list to thumbnails and icons.

2.

Expand the Project panel view by dragging its right edge to the right so you can see all nine items.

3.

Click Audio 4a.aif to select it and then click the Play button next to the Preview screen (highlighted in the next figure) to play the eerie-sounding clip.

You can click any other asset and play it. The Play button will be inactive (grayed-out) for still images and graphics.

4.

Click Video 4.avi and drag the slider under the Project Preview screen a few seconds into the clip.

5.

Click the Poster Frame button next to the Preview screen to create a new thumbnail image for that clip.

Note

That new thumbnail shows up immediately in the Project panel. The thumbnail view has an audio display in it indicating this is a video clip with audio.

6.

Double-click the Graphic 2 file folder icon thumbnail to view its five thumbnailsfour graphic layers and a sequence.

7.

Click the file folder with the up arrow (highlighted in the following figure) to return to the main Project panel view.

9.

Type in

Audio to replace

Bin 02 and press Enter.

10.

Create one more bin and name it

Stills .

11.

Drag and drop the three audio clips onto the Audio file folder thumbnail.

12.

Drag and drop the two stills into their folder.

13.

Do some housecleaning by dragging the folders and remaining files into a tidy 3x2 grid as shown in the next figure.

14.

Return to the List view by clicking the List button (to the left of the Icon view button).

15.

Click somewhere in the Project panel to deselect any bin that might be selected.

Note

You need to do this here so the bin you're about to add won't be a sub-folder inside another folder. There are instances when you might want to use sub-folders to help organize the Project panel.

16.

Click the Bin button to create a new bin. Name it

Sequences .

17.

Open the Graphic 2 bin and drag and drop the Graphic 2 Sequence in the Sequences bin.

18.

Drag Sequence 01 to that bin as well.

19.

Click twice on Name at the top of the file link list in the Project panel to put all the asset links and bins in alphabetical order. Your Project panel should look like the following figure.
