Importing assets: Lesson 4-3

In this book's Lessons 1-3 your projects started with links to assets that I had already placed in the Project panel. Adding those links to the Project panel

importing assets, in Premiere Pro parlanceis easy. But there are a few issues to keep in mind. This lesson will cover importing how-tos and the issues you're most likely to encounter.

Adobe Certified Expert exam objectives

Discuss considerations related to using and importing still images and digital audio.

In this mini-lesson you will import all four standard media types: video, audio, graphics and stills. I will show you two importing methods. And you will take a look at the properties of audio and graphic files. In Lesson 4-4 you'll look more closely at image files.

You can continue where you left off in Lesson 4-2, or open Lesson 4-3.prproj from the Lesson 4 folder.

You should see the standard Premiere Pro opening workspace. All the frames should be empty except for the Sequence 01 item in the Project panel and in the Timeline.

1.

Select File > Import.

2.

Navigate to the Lesson 4 folder, select the two audio clips, the graphic file, the two stills, and the video (see next tip if you don't know how to select multiple files), and then click Open.

Selecting all but one (or more) files

Use the group select method here (plus one additional step) to select all but one (or more) files. As I explained earlier in the book, select a group of contiguous files using the marquee selectclick and dragmethod or the Shift+click method. Then press Ctrl+click to deselect one (or more) of them. In this case deselect the three Lesson 4.prproj files.

3.

Double click inside the Project panel, in the empty space below the newly added clips.

Note

This is a different and faster way to open the Import window. You could also use the keyboard shortcut: Ctrl+I.

You will import files from a different file folder, demonstrating that you don't have to keep all your assets in the same place. The Project panel simply lists links to your assets, wherever they may be.

4.

Navigate to the Lesson 2 folder, select Audio 2.wav and Graphic 2.psd (the audio clip and Photoshop layered graphic you worked on in Lesson 2), and click Open. Premiere Pro imports the WAV file without a hiccup. For the Photoshop file, Premiere Pro pops up an Import Layered File dialog box.

5.

Select Import As: Sequence and click OK.

You could have selected Import As: Footage and then had the option of merging all the layers into a single graphic or selecting a specific layer. Choosing Import As: Sequence does two things:

  • Adds a file folder to your Project panel with all the Photoshop layers listed as separate clips

  • Creates a new sequence with all the layers on separate video tracks

6.

Right-click Audio 4b.mp3 in the Project panel and select Properties from the context-sensitive menu.

Note

The Source Audio Format is 44100 Hz - 16 bit Stereo (standard CD audio quality) and the Project Audio Format is 48000 Hz - 32-bit floating point Stereo. Premiere Pro upconverts all audio to the project setting, thereby ensuring no quality is lost during editing. Floating point data allow for even more precise and smoother edits.
