Enhancing motion with shadows and beveled edges: Lesson 10-5
PiPs have a much more realistic feel when their shrunken clips have drop shadows, beveled edges or some other kind of border.
1. | Open the Lesson 10-5 Start sequence. It has six layered clips (you might need to use the Timeline scroll bar to see them all). The top five all have 25% motion presets applied. I adjusted a Spin In preset for the top clip to change its location to the center of the screen. The clip on the bottom of the sequence in the Video 1 track will serve as the PiP background. |
2. | Drag the CTI past the 1-second point to display the five PiPs. |
3. | Drag Bevel Edges Thin (Presets > Bevel Edges) to the top clip in the sequence. |
4. | Zoom the Program Monitor view in to 150% to get a better look at this effect. It'll show up in the center of the Monitor. The next figure shows how it'll look after you adjust the Bevel Edges parameters.![]() |
5. | Open the Bevel Edges disclosure triangles in the Effect Controls panel and change its parameters as follows (use the next figure as a guide):
|
6. | Click Lesson 10 Bevel Edges , give it a description if you want to, and click OK. This new Preset shows up immediately in the Presets folder. |
NoteIf you had used Keyframes with this effect, selecting one of the three TypesScale or Anchor to In or Out Pointwould have been of some value. The Presets I created for the lessons so far are all Anchored to the In Point to ensure they play at the speed I want in contrast to the Scale setting, which adjusts Preset keyframe locations depending on the length of the clip. 8. | Drag Lesson 10 Bevel Edges from the Presets bin to the each clip on video tracks 2-5 (not to the clip on Video 1that's the full-screen video you'll use as a background for the PiP). |
9. | Play this sequence (return the Program Monitor View Zoom Level to Fit). All five PiPs will have the same beveled-edge look. |
Adding a drop shadow
1. | Drag Drop Shadow (Video Effects > Perspective) on the top clip. |
2. | Change Drop Shadow parameters in the Effect Controls window as follows (use the next figure as a guide): |
NoteYou want the shadow to fall away from any perceived light source. In this mini-lesson you set the light direction for Bevel Edges to about 140°. To make shadows fall away from a light source add or subtract 180° from the light source direction to get the correct direction for the shadow to fall.
- Increase the distance so you can see the shadow (you might need to adjust the View Zoom Level of the Program Monitor to see how this works).
- Give your shadow some Softness to make it more realistic. Generally, the greater the Distance parameter, the more Softness you should apply.
3. | Apply these same values to the other four PiPs either one at a time or by saving and using a Preset. |
4. | Play this sequence. It should look like the Lesson 10-5 Finish sequence. |
