Working with Source Monitor editing tools: Lesson 5-4

It's helpful to trim clips before moving them from the Project panel (or Storyboard) to the Timeline. Do that by double-clicking a file name or thumbnail to display it to the Source Monitor and trim it there.

Adobe Certified Expert exam objective

Given an option in the Monitor panel, explain the purpose of the option or when to use that option.

1.

Continue with Lesson 5-3 or open Lesson 5-4.

2.

Drag a marquee around all four clips in the Lesson 5-3 sequence in the Timeline and press Delete.

Selecting multiple clips

Another way to select more than one clip in the Timeline is to Shift+click on clips, one at a time. This works the same way as the standard Windows Ctrl+click method for selecting a group of files one file at a time.

3.

Double-click Video 5k to open it in the Source Monitor.

Note

You also can drag the clip from the Project panel and drop it on the Source Monitor.

4.

Move the Source Monitor's CTI to 02;13, just before the dancer slams his foot to the floor. That's where you want this clip to start.

Source Monitor editing tools.

5.

Click the Set In Point button.

Note

The Set In Point button is the same as that used in the Capture panel. It also has the same keyboard shortcut: I.

6.

Play the clip, listen for a logical out-point and place the Source Monitor's CTI there. I would select 06;02.

Move to exact timecode

Rather than slide to a location in the clip, you can type in a timecode and go there directly. In this case, click on the blue timecode (on the left side of the Source Monitor), type in 6;02 and press Enter.

7.

Click the Set Out Point button.

8.

Navigate back and forth between the in- and out-points by clicking the Go to In Point (keyboard shortcut: Q) and Go to Out Point (V). And play that entire segment by clicking the Play In to Out button.

9.

Move the Timeline CTI to the beginning of the sequence.

10.

Check to see that the Video 1 and Audio 1 track headers (highlighted in the next figure) are selected

targeted in Premiere Pro parlance. If not, click on one or both to highlight them (their corners also become rounded).

11.

Click the Source Monitor Lesson 5-3 Sequence.

Note

Clicking either Insert or Overlay will place the clip at the Timeline CTI.

12.

Double-click Video 5l to put that clip in the Source monitor.

13.

Twirl down the disclosure triangle at the top of the Source Monitor.

All clips viewed in the Source Monitor show up in this list. You can access them here and remove all or one of them at a time by selecting Close All or Close.

14.

Play Video 5l in the Source Monitor and listen for edit pointsthe beginning or end of a rhythmic phrase. I suggest you put the In-point at 06;04 and the Out-point at 09;23.

15.

See that the Timeline CTI is at the end of the first clip (it goes there automatically after an Insert of Overlay edit) and click the Insert button.

Play the Timeline to see how that edit works.

16.

Use the Source Monitor to create in- and out-points for Video 5m. I suggest 06;03 and 09;21.

17.

Place the Timeline CTI between the first and second clips (use the Page Up key).

18.

Click the Insert button.

That does a standard Insert edit. It places the new clip at the CTI and shoves the previous clip to its right farther down the sequence to make room.

19.

Use the Source Monitor to create in- and out-points for Video 5n. I suggest 09;20 and 13;08.

20.

Place the Timeline CTI between the second and third clips.

21.

Click the Toggle Take Audio and Video button until you see the filmstrip button (). You will lay down video-only without changing the existing audio.

22.

Click the

Overlay button.

That covers the video portion of the previously placed third clip with this new clip but does not change the audio. Play the sequence to see how the edit works.
