Previewing Your DVD project: Lesson 18-1

You will create a DVD with a main menu that links to two videos, a slideshow and two scene selection menus.

A limitation of the Premiere Pro DVD authoring module is that you cannot link to each scene selection menu directly from the main menu. As you add scenes you reach a limit to the number of buttons allowed in the selected menu template. Premiere Pro then automatically creates a second scene selection menu, accessible only from the first scene selection menu.

There's no getting around that, but I will show you something of a work-around that at least lets you have a separate scene selection menu for each video.

1.

Play the Lesson 18 Intro video.

2.

Open Premiere Pro to Lesson 18.

It has two sequences. You will do your DVD authoring in Lesson 18 Start. But first you'll take a look at how things should look when you're done.

3.

Select Window > lesson 18-3.

4.

Click the Lesson 18 Finished tab to open that sequence in the Timeline.

That displays a collection of menu thumbnail images in the Source Monitor. This DVD has a main menu and two scene selection menus, as well as three videos.

5.

Use the scroll bar in the DVD Menus window (highlighted in the previous figure) to display Main Menu 1.

6.

Click in the Source Monitor screen to the right of the model to select the menu (not its text).

That displays Menu Background and Audio editing tools in the Effect Controls panel. There you can change the menu background, add audio, and set the duration of button animations (there are no animated buttons in this project's main menu).

7.

Click the Preview DVD button.

That simulates how your project will work in a DVD player. Note that the main menu has an audio loop, and that as you move your mouse over its four text lines they highlight in turn, indicating that if you click there you will move to a video or another menu. You also can use the navigation buttons highlighted in the next figure to simulate using a DVD remote.

Note

Feel free to navigate through this DVD preview in any fashion that suits you. I point out a few highlights in the next steps.

DVD Preview navigation buttons.

8.

Click Scene Selection.

That opens the first of two scene selection menus. Note that the buttons have videos playing in them, there is a link back to the Main Menu, and there is a small triangle that links you to the next scene selection menu.

9.

Click the triangle.

That takes you to the Scene Selection menu for the second video on this DVD.

10.

Click 2nd Dancer and let it play for a few seconds.

11.

Click the Next Scene button (highlighted earlier in the DVD Preview navigation figure).

That takes you to the 3rd Dancer scene.

12.

Let it play to its end.

When done, it will return you to the Main Menu.

13.

Click Behind the Scenes.

That takes you to a slide showa video of five-second stills. When it ends (it's almost two minutes long, but you can click the Fast Forward button to zip through it), it will return you to the main menu, or you can click the Main Menu button in the navigation bar.
