Reporting Errors to Microsoft

When a program or Windows itself terminates abnormally, a new XP feature lets you report the error to Microsoft over the internet (Figure 6.16 ). If enough people report the same error, then (one assumes) Microsoft will fix the bug or at least post a Knowledge Base article. Microsoft swears that only technical information is sent for purely technical purposesnot for marketing or license compliance. You can fine-tune error reporting or turn it off.

Figure 6.16. A "Please tell Microsoft" dialog box appears after a program crashes or after you reboot following a Windows "blue screen of death" system error. Click Send Error Report to transmit the error details to Microsoft; otherwise, click Don't Send. Sometimes, as shown here, you can have Windows try to recover your unsaved work.

To configure error reporting:

1. Choose Start > Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > System > Advanced tab > Error Reporting (Figure 6.17 ).

Figure 6.17. You can choose to report only Windows system errors, only program errors, or both (or neither). Click Choose Programs if you want to report errors for some programs but not others.

or

Press Windows logo key+Break; then choose Advanced tab > Error Reporting.

2. To turn off error reporting, select the Disable Error Reporting option.

or

To report errors, select the Enable Error Reporting option; then select the types of errors that you want to report.

3. Click OK in each open dialog box.
