Using the Help Index

To search for help successfully you must speak Microsoft's dialect of English. If you want to snuff a file on your hard drive, do you search for

erase? delete? remove? The official term is

delete , but any of these will work thanks to Help Center's keyword searches, which include common synonyms. In other searches you may not be so lucky. The best way to learn the Windows vocabulary is to browse the Help Center index.

To use the Help index:

On the navigation bar, click Index (or press Alt+N).

Help Center displays a list of keywords, sorted alphabetically (Figure 3.7 ).

In the keyword text box, type a word.

As you type, the highlighted selection jumps to the keyword that's the closest match.

Double-click a list entry to see its matching help page in the right panel.

If an entry has subentries, double-click an indented subentry rather than the top-level entry.

Tip

Type

troubleshooting to see a list of Windows' Troubleshooters. Use these wizardlike tools to identify and resolve hardware, software, and networking problems (Figure 3.8 ).

Figure 3.8. This troubleshooter steps you through help screens designed to help you fix network problems.
