Managing User Profiles

Chapter 6, for example, that you can copy icons to the Programs folder in the All Users profile to make applications available to everyone. All Users contains folders similar to those in individual user profiles (Figure 16.16 ).

Figure 16.16. What you see on your desktopthe Favorites menu, Send To menu, Start menu, and so onis a combination of what's in your user profile and what's in the All Users profile.

When you create a new account, Windows determines the new user's desktop look by using the Default User profile (a hidden folder in Documents and Settings). To change this starting point, change the desktop, Start menu, Favorites menu, and theme of a normal account (your own, perhaps) to what you want the new default to be, complete the following steps.

To change the Default User profile:

1. In Windows Explorer, choose Tools > Folder Options > View tab; select Show Hidden Files and Folders; then click OK.

2. Choose Start > Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > System > Advanced tab > User Profiles section > Settings (Figure 16.17 ).

Figure 16.17. The (hidden) Default User profile determines what a newly created user sees on the desktop. Use the User Profiles dialog box to change the default appearance by copying other profile settings to the Default User profile.

3. Select the account whose settings you want to copy; then click Copy To.

The Copy To dialog box opens.

4. Click Browse, and navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\Default User.

5. Click OK in each open dialog box.

6. In Explorer, re-hide hidden files.

Tip

A

roaming user profile, which your system Administrator creates, is available every time you log on to any domain computer.
