Sorting Icons

By default Windows Explorer sorts icons alphabetically by name (listing all folders first, followed by all files), but you can sort them in other ways.

To sort icons:

In Windows Explorer, select a folder; choose View > Arrange Icons By; then choose a sorting priority from the submenu:

Name to sort alphabetically by name.

Size to sort by file size, with the smallest first. Folders aren't sorted by size.

Type to sort alphabetically by file type, which keeps files with the same file extension together (.doc for Word files or .exe for programs, for example).

Modified to sort by the date when the file or folder was last modified, with the most recent first.

Tidying Your Desktop" in Chapter 2.

Details view offers more sorting options than the other views. You can reverse-sort (from Z to A, for example) and sort by any visible column.

To sort icons in Details view:

Click the heading of the column to sort by.

To reverse the sort order, click the column heading again (Figure 5.18 ).

Figure 5.18. Subtle shading indicates the sort column. A small arrow in the column heading points up or down to indicate the sort direction.

The sorted column's header shows a small arrowhead pointing up for ascending sort or down for descending sort.
