Setting up User Accounts" in Chapter 16.A geographically limited network that spans a small area (typically, a building or two) is called a local area network (LAN). This chapter describes how to set up a simple workgroup network (also called a peer-to-peer network), appropriate for 10 or fewer computers, on XP Home and Pro editions. XP Pro (but not Home) also supports domain networks for large organizations. A full-time geek (or department) sets up and administers a domain, which can have thousands of users. In this chapter, I don't cover domain setup, but I do describe how to join an existing domain. Ordinary users can set up and administer their own workgroup but not a domain.
