Grouping Icons

The Show in Groups feature imposes grouping categories based on how icons are sorted. In a folder sorted by file type, for example, text files appear in one group, Word files appear in another group, and Photoshop files in another. Sorting by size yields, say, Tiny, Small, Medium, and Large groups. Grouping is useful for scanning crowded folders.

To group icons:

In Windows Explorer, select a folder; then choose View > Arrange Icons By > Show in Groups (Figures 5.19 and 5.20).

Figure 5.19. These icons are sorted by the dates they were last changed. The Show in Groups feature categorizes them by Today, Yesterday, and so on.

Figure 5.20. When the same icons are sorted by name, they're grouped like a book's index: A, B, C....

Tips

Right-click an empty area in Explorer's right pane to use the Arrange Icons By menu.

Grouping isn't available in Filmstrip and List views.

Within each time period, the icons in Figure 5.19 are sorted alphabetically by name (listing all folders first, followed by all files).
