Displaying Summary Information

The

status bar is the rectangular panel that runs along the bottom of an Explorer window and displays settings and statistics about the selected files, folders, or disks. The status bar is divided into sections that show different information. If you're used to an earlier Windows version, you'll notice that XP hides the status bar by default.

To show or hide the status bar:

In Windows Explorer, choose View > Status Bar to toggle the status bar on or off (Figure 5.6).

Figure 5.6. The Windows Explorer status bar shows the number of objects selected, their combined size, and free disk space.

Tips

The status bar displays a short explanation of any menu command that you point to.

Double-clicking the status bar's My Computer icon displays the Internet Security Properties dialog box…which makes little sense. Microsoft chose this behavior to make the Windows Explorer status bar act like the Internet Explorer status bar.

Status bars appear in many programsall Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite programs, for examplebut their layout and behavior depend on the program. Some sections respond to clicks, double-clicks, or right-clicks; no standard exists. Just try clicking or pointing.
