Transferring Existing Files and Settings

The Files and Settings Transfer Wizard will help you move settings from one computer to another, including your personal files and info for Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, Microsoft Office, and some third-party applications (Eudora, AOL Instant Messenger, WordPerfect, Quicken, Adobe Photoshop, and Acrobat Reader, for example), as well as desktop, display, and dial-up connection settings. The XP CD contains a version of the wizard that you can run on another Windows computereven one that's not running XP.

If you have two computers, you can transfer files and settings from the old one to the new one via a network connection, direct cable connection, floppies, CD-R, or Zip disk. If you have only one computer, run the wizard before you install XP, and save the file and settings to disk or a second hard drive.

To collect the files and settings from the old computer:

1. Insert the Windows XP CD into the drive of the computer from which you want to transfer files and settings.

The Welcome window appears (refer to Figure A.3). (If it doesn't, open Windows Explorer; navigate to the CD drive; then double-click setup.exe.)

2. Click Perform Additional Tasks.

3. Click Transfer Files and Settings.

The Files and Settings Transfer Wizard appears.

4. Click Next to skip the Welcome page.

5. Select Old Computer (Figure A.8 ); then click Next.

Figure A.8. Use the same wizard to save your files and settings on one computer (no matter what version of Windows it runs) and reinstate them on your Windows XP computer.

6. Select the transfer method that you want to use (Figure A.9 ); then click Next.

Figure A.9. If you back up to removable disks, keep track of the order in which you create them. You'll have to insert them into the new computer in that same order.

7. If you selected Direct Cable in the preceding step, follow the instructions on the Set up Your Serial Connection page that appears; then click Next.

8. Select the information that you want to transfer to the new PC (Figure A.10 ); then click Next.

Figure A.10. You can transfer your settings, files, or both. Check the box if you want to create a list of

specific files and settings to transfer.

9. If you checked Let Me Select a Custom List of Files and Settings When I Click Next in the preceding step, build a custom list on the Select Custom Files and Settings page that appears; then click Next.

10. The Install Programs on Your New Computer page tells you which programs are associated with the settings you've chosen; click Next.

Install these programs on your new computer

before you transfer the settings.

The wizard displays its progress as it collects your files and settings.

11. If you selected Floppy Drive or Other Removable Media in step 6, Windows prompts you to insert the media (such as a floppy disk or USB flash drive).

12. Click Finish.

To transfer the files and settings to the new computer:

1. On the Windows XP computer, choose Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Files and Settings Transfer Wizard.

2. Click Next to skip the Welcome screen.

3. Select New Computer (refer to Figure A.8); then click Next.

4. Select I Don't Need the Wizard Disk; then click Next.

5. Specify the location of the saved files and settings on the old computer (that is, specify the same transfer method that you chose in Figure A.9); then click Next.

6. Follow the onscreen instructions, which vary by transfer method.

The wizard displays its transfer progress.

7. Click Finish.

You may have to log off or restart your computer for the settings to take effect.
