Taking Your Exercises Farther
- Light Tracer:
Try using the city.max scene (from the previous chapter) to work on getting the feel for outdoor lighting. If you added a Volume Fog, all the better; you can make one scene sunny and another completely overcast. Bonus points to animate between the two! - Ink 'n Paint:
Try a toon-shaded version of the city.max scene. You'll have to adjust the line weights, based on the distance from the camera, to avoid the line "clogging up" the painted areas. - mental ray:
Another area where mental ray is superior to the scanline renderer is in reflective/refractive caustics, such as light interacting with water. An excellent tutorial based on a swimming pool has been included with 3ds max 7, which will help you to understand how to use this effect.
