  • Chapter 7. Precision Modeling

    By A.J. Jefferies

Architects visualize a sprawling metropolis before a shovel has touched soil. Designers market an mp3 player months before production. Engineers test prototype cars from the comfort of their desks. 3D makes all these things possible.

The representation of real-world objects by means of 3D modeling requires meticulous planning and attention to detail. To most people, the words "precision" and "computer" go hand in hand; however, the words "human" and "error" share the same association!

How can we be accurate when by our very nature we make mistakes? The fact is, to achieve precision in 3D modeling we don't need a degree in mathematics, thick-rimmed spectacles, or even an unhealthy obsession with lab coats. Instead, 3ds max allows us to be as precise as we want or need, even for basic modeling operations. In this chapter, we are going use a multitude of techniques to construct a kitchen scene; at the same time, we will look at some modeling fundamentals.
