  • Chapter 21. Compositing

    The rendering of 3D art and animations is but a part of the larger production; sometimes a very small part. Being able to pass along elements of a rendering to a compositor is key to streamlining a workflow. Even when compositing might seem unnecessary, it can reduce the rendering time on large scenes and add flexibility at the end of the production process.

    Certain effects, such as glowing lights, cannot be added during a render. They must be added to the scene in a separate pass after the main rendering is completed. There are two ways to do this: through Video Post or in the Effects panel. The Video Post utility within 3ds max can also be used for overlays, switching cameras, and many other handy functions. As the procedure is pretty much the same for the effects seen in Figure 21.1, they will be covered as Video Post effects only.
