  • Chapter 12. Lighting Basics

    By Jon McFarland

Lighting in computer graphics, in its simplest terms, is the addition of illumination in a scene. This must be done with forethought and planning to ensure that the proper look and feel of the scene is communicated to the intended audience. If the scene light is too bright, the scene will be washed out and unappealing. If the scene is too dark, the subtle intricacies and fine details may be lost. If a CG character's lighting doesn't match the real-world environment into which it is being composited, the intended realism will never coalesce. Although lighting has become more powerful in recent years, its proper implementation will require practice, patience, and an ongoing desire to expand your skills.
