Chapter 11. Filemaker and Other Programs

Whenever you import or export a spreadsheet file, you're using FileMaker to communicate with other software. This transfer of information is important, but it's limited and indirect. You're forced to create a new file in a format that both programs can read, and only unformatted text and numeric information is transferable. Sometimes that's enough, like when you just want to export a list of names and numbers. But when tempting data sits out of reach in industrial-strength databases while you re-create the parts you need, you can really feel hemmed in by these limitations.

Rest assuredthere are workarounds for many applications. In some cases FileMaker itself provides links to other information, either with its built-in flexibility or through plug-ins that come with it. Scripting is also key to unlocking access to other programs, their formats, and their data.Using scripting, you can not only transfer files to and from other programs, you can embellish the information with formatting and manipulate the programs themselves.
