Hiding Related Files

Rather than clutter up the Open Remote File dialog box with files that will be opened automatically by relationships, you can set just one file (like a Main Menu) to be visible in the dialog box and set the rest to be hidden.

To hide related files

1 .Open the related database that you want to hide, choose FileMaker Pro > Sharing> FileMaker Network.

2 .Click the name of the file in the Currently open files list.

Check the " Don't display in Open Remote File dialog" check box (Figure 16.2).

Figure 16.2. A file to set to " Don't display" won't appear in the host's list, but will be available if opened by a relationship or script.

3 .Repeat steps 2 and 3 for all related files that you want to hide.

The related files won't appear in the Host's file list, but they will open on guest computers along with the main file.

Tip

Make sure that you set the same passwords and Privilege Sets for all related files you want to host. If you don't, the main file will open, but the related files won't be accessible. When a file is opened through a relationship, the related files accept the master file's password by default and don't require the user to enter the password for each file.

Multiuser vs. OS File Sharing

FileMaker uses its own set of rules for sharing files. Windows or Macintosh OS File Sharing doesn't even have to be turned on for the host and guest machines to share FileMaker files. In fact, it is strongly recommended that a computer acting as a FileMaker host should have any file sharing protocols other than FileMaker turned off.

Guests should never try to open a shared FileMaker database through their OS's File Sharing dialog boxes. They must always open files by clicking the Host button in FileMaker's Open File dialog box or by using a script that's been written to automate the process.
