Chapter 14. Data Importing and Repairing

The world is full of information and comparatively little of it is perfect and ready to use in your database. Foreign data can be sprinkled with useless formatting and unreadable characters. Tabular text and spreadsheets may be easy to import, but often require so much editing that you're tempted to start from scratch. Perhaps you've been given the task of incorporating a file whose data overlaps with your own, but hesitate to corrupt your own files with duplications and inconsistencies. Even existing FileMaker databases can present problems. They may not have been created in a recent version, or have been so poorly designed that they need emergency care.

There are several strategies you can use to overcome these problems. Some take advantage of word processors and spreadsheets to clean up the problems before you import. Others are simple FileMaker methods that mold the new data into clean, useful records.
