Limiting Web User Options

Many times, Web access can seem like an all-or-nothing endeavor. Some people should never be able to see or change information, others should be able to have complete control. But what about those people who should be given access to some information in a database, but not everything?

FileMaker offers ways to block a user or group of users from viewing, accessing, or changing specific records. For example, you may have a database in which Web users are welcome to search for an employee's office address, phone number, and email, but not a social security number. To fine-tune access, you'll want to create custom privileges for some accounts.

To restrict user finds

1 .

Choose File > Define >Accounts & Privileges. Click the Privilege Sets tab.

2 .

Double-click the Web user Privilege Set you want to restrict. When the Edit Privilege Set dialog box appears, click the Records drop-down list and choose Custom privileges (Figure 17.13).

3 .When the Custom Record Privileges dialog box appears, make sure the table that contains the data you want to hide is selected. Choose "limited" from the drop-down menu under Field Access (Figure 17.14).

4 .The Custom Field Privileges dialog box will appear. From the Field Privileges scrolling list, select the first field you want to block. Select the "no access" radio button (Figure 17.15).

5 .Repeat step 4 for as many fields as you want to block from Web access. Click OK five times to finish.

When any Web user with this privilege set looks at a layout, the blocked information will not be accessible in the browser (Figure 17.16).
