Using Windows to Access ODBC Data

Gaining access to a SQL database in Windows is very much the same as making a FileMaker database available, only easier.

To access ODBC data in Windows

1 .From the Windows Start menu, go to Settings > Control Panel. When the Control Panel appears, double-click Administrative Tools. Double-click Data Sources (DBC).

2 .When the ODBC Data Source Administrator dialog box appears, select the System DSN tab. Click Add.

3 .When the Create New Data Source dialog box appears, double-click the appropriate driver in the scrolling list (Figure 13.10).

Figure 13.10. FileMaker, Microsoft, and any third-party drivers you have installed will appear in the Create New Data Source dialog box.

Our sample database is in Microsoft Access, so we choose the Microsoft Access Driver from the list.

4 .When the ODBC Setup dialog box appears, type a reference name for the file in the Data Source Name box. Click the Select button in the Database section (Figure 13.11).

Figure 13.11. FileMaker needs a name by which to identify the SQL file.

5 .

When the Select Database dialog box appears, click Network to find the networked drive that holds the database, or navigate to the local drive and folder that holds the file. When you find the file, select it in the scrolling list (Figure 13.12). Click OK three times to finish.
