Using a Match Field to Choose a Related Record

Once you have a relationship between two tables and have created Lookup fields (or added related fields to the layout), you can bring data from the source to the receiver table.

The simplest (though not necessarily best) way to transfer data is to type the serial number value directly into the match field.

To use a match field to choose a related record

1 .

Go to a layout that has the match field and switch to Browse mode.

2 .

Create a new record (Control+N/Command+N).

3 .Type the customer's serial number (in our example, from the Customer table) into the serial number field. We have used the Key Serial field (Figure 6.23).

Figure 6.23. Enter a number in the Serial Key field to create the link between the records.

4 .Click someplace else on the layout or press Enter/Return. The related look-up data will now appear in all the fields (Figure 6.24).

Figure 6.24. The looked-up data will not appear until you click outside the field or press Enter.

Tip

Related values will change if another value is entered in the match field. To update a single record, change or clear the serial number value and then reenter it.
