Appendix A. Filemaker and Third-Party Software
FileMaker provides you with a variety of tools to construct interfaces, manipulate data, and serve databases over the Web. But, like any off-the-shelf program, there's a limit to what it can do. You certainly don't want it to become so enormous it would overwhelm your hard drive, and so complicated that it would stop being the best choice for database users who also want to have a life. Like many savvy software developers, the folks at FileMaker have found a way to keep FileMaker easy to understand while meeting specialized user needs. They've built into the program the ability to incorporate a wide variety of plug-ins, as well as making it easy for other developers to create external programs that work seamlessly with FileMaker to make it a true database powerhouse.
