Using a Portal for Navigation

By making a portal field into a button, you can quickly switch to related records by just clicking the field.

To use a portal for navigation

1 .Go to a layout with the self-relationship portal and switch to Layout mode (Control+L/Command+L).

In this example, we use the company portal we created in "To display and access self-relationship data" on page 132.

2 .

Click one of the self-relationship portal fields. In this example, we use Full Name (Figure 6.51). Choose Format > Button.

Figure 6.51. Select a field in the portal to make into a button.

3 .In the Specify Button dialog box, scroll down to the Navigation section and select Go to Related Record (Figure 6.52).

Figure 6.52. Select the button action from the Navigation section. We chose Go to Related Record.

4 .In the Options section, click the Specify button. When the Options dialog box appears, select the table occurrence in the "Get related record from:" drop-down list.

5 .

In the "Show record using layout:" drop-down list, select Current Layout (Figure 6.53). Click OK twice.

Figure 6.53. Select the layout the related record will appear in.

6 .Switch to Browse mode. Click a Name field in the portal. You'll now see the record for the name you selected.

Tip

Under most circumstances, when you make a field into a button, you can no longer use the field to edit data. However, once you click the field/button, FileMaker brings you to the related record where you can make changes.
