Using a Mac to Access ODBC Data

The Mac is definitely a second-class citizen in the FileMaker ODBC world, at least in version 7. Not only can't you use a Mac-based FileMaker file as an ODBC source, but the FileMaker version for the Mac OS does not preinstall any ODBC drivers. If you want to use your Mac to access SQL database data, you'll need to install and configure the ODBC drivers you need.

To install and configure ODBC drivers on a Mac

1 .Navigate to the ODBC Import Drivers Installer inside Applications> FileMaker Pro 7 > ODBC Import Drivers. Double-click to launch the installer.

The Mac OS will ask you for your password to proceed.

2 .

When the installer window opens, click Install (Figure 13.13). Click Quit to finish.

3 .Navigate to Applications > DataDirect ODBC folder. Double-click ODBC Configure inside the folder.

4 .The Configuration Manager dialog box appears with the User DSN tab selected. If the data source you want to access appears in the list, click OK to finish. Otherwise, click Add (Figure 13.14).

5 .

When the Create New User Data Source dialog box appears, select the appropriate driver from the ODBC driver list (Figure 13.15). Click OK.

6 .When the SQL Server Wire Protocol Driver Configuration dialog box appears, input a descriptive name for the database in the Data Source Name box.

7 .Type the IP address of the server in the Server Address box. Type the name of the SQL database in the Database Name box (Figure 13.16).

In most cases, you won't need to input a Server Name, and the connection will work fine through the default port number provided by the software.

8 .

Click OK twice to finish, or repeat steps 47 for any additional databases you need to access.
