FileMaker Editions and Their Functions
With the version 7 release of the FileMaker application family, three different aspects of database management become more sophisticated and specialized. The original database application is ably represented by FileMaker Pro 7 and FileMaker Developer 7. As in previous releases, Developer includes the Pro version, but offers additional tools. Most notable are an improved script debugger and a utility that generates a report of the complete structure of a database, including field definitions, relationships, and scripts. Developer can also produce runtime databases that can be used independently, without the presence of the FileMaker applicationperfect for creating database-driven kiosk applications.FileMaker Server, previously only one application, has now been released in two forms, Server 7 and Server Advanced. Server 7 is the update of the previous Server version, with a slew of performance and security enhancements. Server Advanced is a new concept, merging all the capabilities of the dedicated Server application with Web server functions. Designed as a powerhouse Web solution, it supports custom Web publishing and ODBC/JDBC hosting capabilities. You will need one of these Server versions if you host FileMaker Pro 7 databases.FileMaker Mobile allows you to access and edit your databases on Palm OS and Pocket PC handheld devices. The latest version not only works seamlessly with all other FileMaker editions, but it can also synchronize with runtime applications created with Developer 7.
