Chapter 2. Organizing Data Efficiently

To get the most out of any set of data, that data must be organized. Although this seems like an obvious statement, executing it is trickier than may initially appear. For every set of information there are dozens, maybe even multiple dozens of ways that information can be categorized, broken into pieces, and connected. Adding more complexity to the process, more than one of those ways may be the "right" way…depending on your goals. The finished database might be one file with multiple tables in it, several files with many fields but only one table in each, or a combination of multitable files and external files that relate to them. No matter how its built, almost every database can be made cleaner, more flexible, and easier to manipulate. Even if you've been creating FileMaker database files for some time, you can benefit from reexamining your process and structure for ways they can be augmented and improved.
