14.8 USING TEMPLATES FOR MESSAGE SUPPRESSION

There are many other concepts related to template configuration that are covered in more detail in the product documentation this section provides an introduction to the concepts of message management. Normal operation with OVO brings many messages into the message browser. Some of them are extremely important and some may be for information only or not required at all. Occasionally, the same message appears multiple times. As shown in Chapter 13, "Out-of-the-box with OpenView Operations," it is possible to configure the server to display one instance of the message and count the duplicates. However, a better method of avoiding unwanted messages at the source is considering when setting up new policies. You can choose to suppress all messages that match the criteria within the conditions, suppress unmatched messages if they do not match the specific conditions, or send a message if the condition is matched. You create a condition for each possible scenario that could potentially generate a message. Figure 14-24 shows the list of conditions for a system log file.Figure 14-24 indicate eight conditions that, the first matched condition, will send a message to the server (the "+" mean message on matched condition). If there are no match conditions, the last condition in the list (shown with a "-") suppresses messages from all other system log file events. For an example of the suppression condition for the system log file, see Figure 14-25.

Monitor or logfile templates read data sources or files at periodic intervals that you specify in the template policy. The information from the data source is analyzed against the conditions, and either a message is created, the event is suppressed per the message suppression rules, or the message is sent to the server. If there are multiple instances of the same event occurring over a period of time, this could cause the duplicates to eventually accumulate in the message browser. Configure the message suppression policies from within the template conditions window. Select the Message Correlation button located on the template conditions window.
