24.1 OVOW and OVOU Communications

The servers are both TCP/IP-based which means that basic communications via commands such as ping allow administrators from either server to verify that network connectivity is in tact. It may be necessary to test connectivity and report the information back to the users at the console in a more structured way. Why not take advantage of the built-in communication and monitoring tools?

24.1.1 Server-to-Server Alive Checks

The servers could also periodically probe for services and resource availability via SNMP. Both servers support the integrated OpenView application

Network Node Manager (NNM) and therefore have the inherent capability to utilize the SNMP applications provided by NNM. NNM is installed with the management server on OVOU. NNM is a plug-in to the MMC on OVOW. When installed, NNM's management functionality is available to periodically check for remote nodes, as discussed in earlier chapters. In this section, the focus is on the SNMP monitoring capability of OVO.

An OVO monitor could provide status information into the message browser about the state of the other management server(s). If an MIB monitor periodically probes a device, an OpenView agent is not required. But it is necessary to have the SNMP components configured, which would normally happen as part of the initial operating system installation. The following references provide information on how SNMP is implemented on the OpenView server platforms:

In addition to installing the SNMP components, after creating a monitor policy, a device icon (represents the MIB monitored OV server), should appear as a message allowed node within the node configuration of the server.
