Chapter 17. Server Administration

There are many OpenView support models operating today that have grown out of the paradigms within the mainframe and distributed computer support environment. In other words, there are primary operators (Tier 1 or Level 1) who monitor and respond to events within the system. When the Tier 1 Operator needs support, she would likely page someone who can take an even closer look at the problem and determine the course of action to resolve the issue. Specialists who are responsible for the applications running on the operating system are working to ensure that the application is healthy and that documented procedures are available for those who are responsible for the daily operations tasks. Vendors are available in this support chain to provide additional break-fix support for any hardware or off-the-shelf software support. If the application is highly customized, likely there are developers on call as well. Take a step back and think about the issues involved with so many people with such a diversity of skills and interests to ensure that the primary service objectives are met or exceeded in the eyes of the customer. The role of system administrator is a key role in coordinating the efforts of many other staff, providing updates to management, and performing important system management and maintenance tasks.

This chapter is an outline of several general OpenView Administration tasks. More specific tasks are outlined in the Administrators Task Guide available via the On-Line Help Interface. Select

HelpOn Tasks for details about how to perform the tasks. You will need to regularly refer to other reference materials as previously listed in Chapter 13, "Out-of-the-box with OpenView Operations." What is important is that you add these items to your administration toolkit and use them as needed.Appendix C, "Resources," that are also useful for more information.
