Appendix B. Hostname Resolution A lot of money is spent on network and systems management systems in order to be proactive when managing systems and networks. And in order to be truly proactive, the problem must be detected and resolved without the customer knowing there was a problem. To do this, the products work correctly. For network and systems management products to work correctly, hostname naming services such as the /etc/hosts file, NIS, and DNS must be properly configured. Configuring these services incorrectly will result in hostnames being out-of-sync in various databases, missed OpenView Operations messages, multiple objects in the NNM topology, and forwarded traps with different hostnames. There are times that products won't even install because the product cannot determine the hostname of the system. Most of these problems can keep you in reactive mode. |
