25.1 AUTO-DISCOVERY AND AUTO-DEPLOYMENT

Learning which nodes and services are on the local network is referred to as

discovery . There are two types of discovery implemented with OVOW. Fast out-of-the-box implementation with OVOW includes service and node discovery.

25.1.1 Service Discovery

The OVO Windows OS

Smart Plug-In (SPI) provides the catalyst that initiates service discovery on supported Windows managed notes. Deploy the service auto-discovery policy to the node. This is done automatically when SPIs are installed. Manually configure service discovery and select

Policy ManagementPolicies grouped by typeService Auto Discovery from the console tree. After a service is discovered, policies are distributed to the managed node and the service map updates with the display of the services that are running on the node. Resources discovered include but are not limited to hardware, operating system, and applications. An example of the service discovery map is shown in Figure 25-1.

25.1.2 Node Discovery

Discovered nodes are listed in the nodes tree of the management console. Policies are automatically deployed to the Windows managed nodes. DNS, or the management server's local host file, is used to discover the UNIX nodes.
