Chapter 16. Built-in Performance Tools

Performance management tools are provided with OpenView Operations. These tools are provided out-of-the-box and are ready to use. Tailor the components for your specific environment. In order to utilize some of the tools, you distribute them to the managed node. When deployed, the tools collect metric data and monitor thresholds. When specific thresholds are met, exceeded, or below normal, the tools generate an appropriate message for the operators' view. Other tools are available at the management server. Menus, applications, and commands built into the OpenView administrator and operator consoles provide easy access to many other performance management tools. Programs such as NNM and Oracle include built-in features or add-on components for performance management. In addition, the operating system has many built-in performance tools.

The collection of performance tools that integrate with OpenView Operations allow you to

  • Diagnose what is happening in the managed environment right now.

  • Characterize what happened this week compared to last week.

  • Plan for capacity increases.

  • Forecast when you may run out of resources.

  • Perform service level management based on transaction response time.

  • Optimize application processing.

  • Analyze resource utilization.

  • Respond to alarm conditions.

  • Solve system management problems before they arise.

The purpose for this chapter is to explore the performance management capabilities with OpenView out-of-the-box. We describe the features and look at the differences between the OpenView Embedded Performance Component (OVOA_EPC) and the OpenView Performance Agent (OVPA). Throughout this chapter the OVOA_EPC is referred to as OVOA (OpenView Operations Agent). Other popular performance tools are also discussed. Resources to help you learn more about performance management are provided in Appendix C.
