17.1 SYSTEM ADMINISTRATION RESPONSIBILITIES

There are many general responsibilities for a system administrator. If you have had the opportunity to administer other types of systems, many of the tasks will seem very familiar, like backup or system shutdown for maintenance. Within many OpenView domains, you'll find more than one administrator. Depending on the size of the enterprise, you might find large teams of administrators and support staff who are located regionally. Many of the accepted responsibilities (from various sources) of a system administrator were outlined in the introduction to Part II of this book, "OpenView Operations." Others include

  • Maintain the operating integrity of the system.

  • Supervise the periodic maintenance of the system and, when necessary, request field service from system vendors.

  • Maintain a log of system problems and communicate them to operators and outside vendors.

  • Install and test upgrade and improvements to the hardware and software; notify outside vendors of weaknesses or defects in their software or equipment.

  • Coordinate the archiving of data from disk to tape or other media.

  • Document the files and software on the system; ensure that outdated or unused files are deleted or archived.

  • Monitor and troubleshoot production operations; assist operators in analyzing and using system resources.

  • Train operators in the proper use of equipment and specific software procedures.

  • Consult with other support staff or software developers on specialized software installed for specific projects.

  • Provide new documentation where necessary, and condense, expand, or reinterpret existing written materials from vendors.

  • Analyze system utilization and accounting data of work performed on the system.

  • Specify and create, where possible, programs that enhance production.

  • Maintain awareness of technical development and make recommendations to management on the need for implementing new technology.
