17.9 REPORTING

Generate reports from the Administrator or Operators user interface by selecting Reports from the Utility menu. The data for the reports is gathered from the Oracle database by using SQL statements. The reports are formatted and presented in an easy to read format inside a display window. There is no way to control the format or the information within the report because these details are included in the SQL script that collects the data. The report interface allows you to save the report to a file or print to a printer. The reports generated for an Operator are different from those available for an administrator.

You can modify the report layout or add your own reports by modifying or adding your own SQL scripts to the directory /etc/opt/OV/share/conf/OpC/mgmt_sv/reports/C. For modifications, it is recommended that you should copy an existing report to a new file. After doing so, or when adding completely new report scripts, make sure to add them to the oper.rpts and/or admin.rpts configuration files so they will be accessible from the user interface by the respective user categories.

17.9.1 Operator Reports

Look at the reports available for an operator and how the operator generates the report. Figure 17.7 shows the list of reports available for an operator. The operator activates the report interface from the message browser menu. Select

ActionsUtilitiesReports .

Figure 17-7. Operator Reports provide operator's with quick reports about the OVO run-time environment.

The Operator selects one report from the list. Selecting Apply generates the report in a separate window, as shown in Figure 17-8.

Figure 17-8. Operator report about a selected active message is a report about the messages shown in the Message Browser.

It is possible to use the default reports as a baseline to create your own reports. Use standard structured query language (SQL) or edit the report file to build reports that are unique to your environment. The default operator report file (oper.rpts) is located in the directory /etc/opt/OV/share/conf/OpC/mgmt_sv/reports/C.

17.9.2 Administrator Reports

The reports available for an Administrator include reports about operators' activities, configuration of templates, and messages, as shown in Figure 17-9. The Administrator generates a report from the Node Bank Menu by selecting

ActionsUtilitiesReports .

Figure 17-9. Administrator reports contain information about the run-time environment for the OVO system administrator.

The default report file (admin.rpts) for the operator is located in the directory /etc/opt/OV/share/conf/OpC/mgmt_sv/reports/C.

17.9.3 External Report Programs

External applications, such as OpenView Reporter, can create reports from data stored in the OV Oracle database. The OV ReportER product requires a separate license and installs on a Windows platform. During the configuration of OV Reporter, you decide which management server database to use for the reports. Integrated OpenView applications such as Smart Plug-Ins or OV Storage Area Manager provide custom reporting facilities to provide information for their specific environments. Refer to the product documentation for details on the integration with OV Reporter. Further enhanced and customized reports are available with the addition of Seagate Crystal Reports®. (OV Report contains and uses Crystal Reports.) The advantages of using the external report tools include customization, portability, and publishing the reports via the web. Additional information about OpenView Reporter is found at http://docs.hp.com/HP-UXHP-UX/onlinedocs/netsys/OV_ReporterConcepts.pdf.

17.9.4 Sample Reports from OV Storage Area Manager

Several report categories and a description of three reports from each category are shown here. There are more reports available in each category. Consult the OVSAM documentation for report integration details. Also, refer to the documentation that comes with the OV Storage Area Manager SPI.
