8.7 SUMMARY

Data collection allows you to focus on the aspects of your enterprise that are important to you. As the network administrator, you are able to collect data and configure threshold values to determine when a potential problem has occurred. When the threshold values are exceeded, NNM gives you the flexibility to configure automatic actions that may help resolve the problem that caused the threshold to be exceeded. Actions may be as simple as causing a popup message to display on a console window. The automatic action may link to a trouble ticketing system, send a message to a paging system, send an email message, or restart a process or service on a local or remote system.

Data collection also allows you to view information graphically and statistically in order to perform trend analysis and capacity planning. It helps determine the overall health and growth of your network.

Devise a plan for how your company can best use data collection. Determine which MIBs you need to monitor. Vendor-specific MIBs may allow you to better manage your network. Recall the SNMP Coke machine scenario from Chapter 1. If your company is in the business of refilling Coke machines, obviously you would like to have a method of being notified when the Coke machines need to be refilled. Implement the MIBs necessary to keep your business running smoothly.
