19.1 DISTRIBUTED OPENVIEW SERVER CONCEPTS OVO management servers are authorized to perform the following tasks on the managed nodes:- Receive messages
- Assume responsibility for the node
- Update the agent software
- Update the license information
- Perform actions
- Distribute customized configurations
Expand these basic application, systems, and network management concepts when multiple OpenView management servers work together to provide an enterprise-wide solution. The multiple management server concepts are often called manager of manager (MoM). Questions that help guide the basic MoM configuration details should include:- Which messages are sent to other servers?
- Which management servers will participate in the configuration?
- How will the servers be authorized to perform actions on remote nodes?
- How will the servers maintain consistent configurations?
Other questions (not covered in this chapter) that are very important include:- How many servers are required?
- Will distributed NNM servers provide additional infrastructure support?
- How will you implement the systems management policies that guide the configuration?
- What types of monitors already exist?
- How will the existing monitors integrate with OVO?
In general, the flexible management configuration implements two key concepts. The first enables a node to send messages to different management servers. The second involves multiple management servers that communicate and send messages to each other.19.1.1 Backup Server If the original management server is unavailable, a backup management server is prepared to take over. This is sometimes called the backup server or failover solution. This solution is implemented without the use of high availability (HA) cluster technology, but requires additional hardware and software.19.1.2 Competence Center and Escalation In the competence or expertise center concept, some messages are filtered at the original management server and then sent to a second management server for further analysis and troubleshooting by software or hardware specialists. The system is programmed to send the filtered messages to the second management server automatically. As an option, a selected message escalation to the competence center is triggered by an operator in the message browser.19.1.3 Follow-the-sun Enterprise operations that are twenty-four hours and seven days (24x7) require distributed systems management operations across different time zones. This follow-the-sun model enables the support functions to shift time zones. Automatic action responses, notifications, and event monitors continue to operate seamlessly and, if necessary, messages are forwarded to systems located in different regions. |
