Chapter 13. Out-of-the-box with HP OpenView Operations

Installing an enterprise-wide system and services management solution begins with a plan. The plan will evolve as you refine the Service Level Agreements and objectives for the scope of work. After an analysis of the current business environment, you can gather the system and network management requirements and begin to work out the design and implementation details of the hardware and software. Whether you are working with a team or as a team of one, you should answer a few questions in the early phases of planning an OpenView implementation. Some of the questions are listed here for reference:

What services are provided by the business?

Who needs what type of systems and service availability information?

What are the security policies and concerns?

Is the current system management environment adequate?

Will the current system management environment map to OVO?

Is there a need to re-engineer the current environment (for example, moving off obsolete technology)?

Are there current system management tools that will readily integrate with the OpenView platform?

When your enterprise management plan calls for NNM and OpenView Operations (the focus of this book), it is important to collaborate with all the potential users, customers, managers, and other staff who will be impacted by this implementation. Root user access is required to install the agent software and components onto the managed nodes. In this chapter, we focus on some of the primary tasks of preparing the management server for the OVO domain. The topics covered include server installation, configuration, administrator and operator consoles and much more.Part 4 of this book, "OpenView Operations for Windows." After the management server hardware and software installation, you have only touched the tip of the iceberg for managing your enterprise with OpenView.
