13.1 CONSIDER A SERVICE LEVEL IMPLEMENTATIONBusinesses provide services to customers. The status of the service(s) is important at all levels of an organization. Service offerings might include email, web, or business-to-business. When a service is rendered unavailable, discovering the root cause and the impact to the business are critical steps in the service recovery process. Unplanned application, system, or device downtime may affect the business and the service delivery to the customer. With OpenView, it is possible to implement an enterprise management operations environment that will show you the status of the services that are supported by the back-end network, systems, and applications. An overall view of the business from a service perspective enables faster resolution of any service impacting problems within the IT infrastructure. For example: You provide email services to customers (internal or external) using several mail servers that are located on different networks. The OV operator Java console can show you a graphical view of the email service. This view is possible as a result of the integration of OpenView Service Navigator at the management server. OV Service Navigator is a separate product but it is tightly integrated with OVO out-of-the-box and is available at no extra cost. The service configuration must be assigned to the operator before service views are visible within the operator's Java console. Figure 13-1 shows an example service view. The OpenView Navigator Concepts and Configuration Guide is available at the OpenView web site: http://ovweb.external.hp.com/lpe/doc_serv/. Figure 13-1. Service graph.[View full size image] ![]()
