8.6 DETAILED SOLUTION TO NETWORK PRINTER EXERCISE



  1. Select

    OptionsLoad/unload MIBS:

    SNMP from the menu bar.

  2. Click the

    [Load…] button and double-click

    Vendor and

    Hewlett-Packard .

  3. Select the

    hp-np

    MIB , then click

    [OK] .

  4. Use the MIB browser to verify the value of the MIB variable changes when you open the paper tray. Select

    ToolsSNMP Browser . Traverse the MIB tree to

    private.enterprises.hp.nm.system.

    net-periperal.netprinter.generalDeviceStatus.gdStatusEntry.

    gdStatusPaperOut

  5. Provide the hostname of the printer and click

    [Query] when the paper tray is closed. Open the paper tray and query the variable again. Verify that the value is 0 when the paper tray is closed and 1 when it is open.

  6. Create a data collection by selecting

    OptionsData Collection & Thresholds .

  7. Select

    EditAddMIB Objects… .

  8. Traverse the MIB tree to add the MIB object

    private.enterprises.hp.nm.system.net-peripheral.netprinter.generalDeviceStatus.gdStatusEntry.

    gdStatusPaperOut .

  9. Complete the following fields in the Collection dialog box. Provide the hostname or IP address as the Source field.

    Source

    printername

    Collection Mode

    Store, Check Thresholds

    Threshold = 1

    Rearm = 0

    Event number 2001

  10. Click the

    [Configure Threshold Event…] button.

  11. Click

    [OK] and

    [Close] when prompted for new event creation.

  12. Select

    ViewEvent IdentifiersDisplay as

    SNMP

    Traps from the Event Configuration dialog box.

  13. Complete the following fields in the Event Configuration dialog box:

    Event Name:
    PaperOut

    Category:
    Tammys Alarms (or select your custom category)

    Popup Notification:
    $2 is out of paper.

  14. Click

    [OK], FileSave , and

    FileClose from Event Configuration.

  15. Click the

    [Configure Rearm Event…] button in the Collection dialog box.

  16. Complete the following fields in the Event Configuration dialog box:

    Event Name:
    PaperOutRearm

    Category:

    Tammys Alarms (or select your custom category)

    Popup Notification:
    The paper has been reloaded in $2.

  17. Click

    [OK], FileSave , and

    FileClose from Event Configuration.

  18. Click

    [OK] in the Collection dialog box.

  19. Select

    FileSave from Data Collection & Thresholds.

  20. Select

    ActionsResume Collection, FileSave , and

    ActionsShow Data from Data Collection & Thresholds.

  21. Test the data collection and popup notifications by opening and closing the paper tray.
